Spellsong Cycle
The Spellsong Cycle is a fantasy series written by L. E. Modesitt, Jr. Set in the fictional world of Erde, wherein magic is based on music and song.
The main character of the first three books of the series is Anna Marshall, a middle-aged music instructor and small-time opera singer who is magically transported from Ames, Iowa to Erde, a fantastical world where songs have a magical power, and where she has the capability to become one of the most powerful sorceresses in the world.〔Publishers Weekly. (excerpt )〕〔Kirkus Reviews. 1996. (excerpt ).〕 The following books center around the actions of Secca, her adopted daughter, twenty years later.〔Zaleski, Jeff; Canon, Peter. "THE SHADOW SORCERESS (Book review)." Publishers Weekly 248, no. 22, p. 56. May 28, 2001.〕
It has been described as "feminist fantasy",〔 and compared favorably against The Saga of Recluce series of novels by Modesitt, his best known works.〔Kirkus Reviews. 1997. (excerpt ).〕 The system of song-based magic is similar to that seen in the earlier Spellsinger Cycle by Alan Dean Foster.
==Books==

*''The Soprano Sorceress'' (1997)
Protagonist Anna Marshall is teleported to Erde, where her musical talent makes her a sorceress, and her otherworldly origins make her especially powerful. Soon after her arrival, she is required to oppose the invaders threatening the realm of Defalk (into which she is initially drawn), and distinguishes herself by massacres of the invading army. When pressed by Defalk's new rulers to accept an impotent position near the contested border, she kills them and declares herself regent for the deposed heir, Lord Jimbob; in which position she re-organizes the realm's economy and later leads an expedition to destroy the invaders at their own headquarters. Throughout all this, she is watched from afar by neutral neighbors, and herself tries and (mostly) fails to communicate with her daughter on Earth.
*''The Spellsong War'' (1998)
Anna, as regent, relies on Lord Jecks and his grandson Jimbob (the heir for whom Anna is substitute), and thus annoys other lords.
*''Darksong Rising'' (1999)
Anna is again subduing rebellious lords and hostile neighbours of Defalk. Anna's attraction to Jecks, and her anxiety over her lethal use of magic (both introduced in the first book), are revisited. This volume resolves most of the problems in the story.
*''The Shadow Sorceress'' (2001)
After Anna's death, Secca must take up her opposition to rebellions and the menace of the Sea-Priests and their drumming magic, and must, like Anna before her, form alliances with reluctant nobles.
*''Shadowsinger'' (2002)
Secca, now Anna's successor, contends with another invasion from the nearby realm of Sturinn, and trains pupils of her own.
